Carpet holds roughly its own weight in soil before it starts to look dirty. By the time you can see traffic lanes, the grit has been grinding against the fibre for months — which is why regular extraction cleaning is a maintenance job, not a cosmetic one.
What's included in a carpet clean
Every carpet job includes the full five-stage process, not a quick pass with a wand:
- Fibre and colourfast test in an inconspicuous corner before anything else happens.
- Dry soil removal with a commercial vacuum — the grit that causes wear comes out first.
- Pre-spray and agitation on traffic lanes, doorways and stains, with proper dwell time.
- Hot-water extraction at around 90°C, injected and vacuumed back out in the same pass.
- Grooming and air movers so the pile dries evenly and quickly.
- Furniture moved and padded — sofas, beds and tables, at no extra charge.
Carpets we clean most often
Wool twist, polypropylene loop, saxony, berber, sisal-look synthetics and stair runners. Wool needs a neutral pH and controlled moisture; polypropylene tolerates a hotter, more aggressive clean but wicks badly if over-wetted. We adjust the method to the fibre, which is the difference between a carpet that looks good for a year and one that re-soils in a month.
Sisal, seagrass and jute are natural fibres that can't take standard extraction — we use a low-moisture method for those, or say honestly if it isn't worth attempting.
How often should carpets be cleaned?
For a typical family home: every 12 months. Add pets or a busy hallway and every 6–9 months keeps the pile from matting. Most carpet manufacturers require professional extraction cleaning at 12–18 month intervals for the warranty to stay valid, so it's worth checking your paperwork.
A carpet replaced early costs £400–£900 a room. Cleaning it costs £30. The maths only works one way.
Drying times and what affects them
Two to four hours in a heated room with reasonable airflow. Thick wool underlay, cold weather and closed windows push that towards six. We bring air movers for hallways and stairs, and we'll tell you before we start if a particular room will take longer.
Carpet Cleaning your questions
Can't see yours? Ring us — we'd rather answer it before you book than after.
How much does carpet cleaning cost?
£30 per room up to 4m × 4m, with a £60 minimum visit. Stairs, hallway and landing together count as one room. Three rooms typically comes to £90, and heavy soiling or pet treatment is quoted before we start — never added afterwards.
Will cleaning damage or shrink my carpet?
Not with the right method. Shrinkage happens when a wool carpet is over-wetted or cleaned at the wrong pH. We test the fibre first, match the solution to it, and control moisture so the backing never gets saturated.
Do old stains come back after cleaning?
Occasionally, and it's called wicking — a stain that soaked into the underlay travels back up the fibre as the carpet dries. We treat sub-surface where needed, and if a mark returns within seven days we come back and re-treat it free.
Can you clean carpets in a rented property?
Yes, and it's a large part of what we do. You'll get a dated invoice and before/after photos in a format letting agents accept for deposit returns. See end of tenancy cleaning for whole-property work.
